During the event that took place couple of days ago, Xiaomi unveiled two new models. One is the Mi Note 2, a model that will try to take a portion of Note 7’s potential market. The other is a gorgeous Mi MIX, a phone characterized by edgeless design, superb hardware, and a ceramic chassis. It has a huge 6.4-inch screen, almost the same size as the screen featured on the Mi Max. Let’s see how these two giant models compare.
Design, Dimensions
Xiaomi Mi MIX is, without any doubt, the most attractive smartphone at this moment. Edgeless design with a huge screen dominating the front and a shiny ceramic body make the phone extremely eye-catching. You won’t find an earpiece and a proximity sensor at the front. The earpiece is replaced by a cantilevered piezoelectric actuator placed behind the glass, enabling sound for phone calls; the proximity sensor is replaced with an ultrasound software solution called “Inner Beauty,” the first of its kind to be found on smartphones. Main camera sensor and a fingerprint sensor are placed on the upper middle part of the backside. Overall, the Mi MIX is the most beautiful smartphone we ever saw.
The Xiaomi Mi Max looks okay; it sports a classic design with three soft keys under the screen on the front. Above the screen, you can find an earpiece along with the selfie camera and a proximity sensor. The main camera is placed on the upper left part of the backside. The chassis is made out of metal, and it looks pretty sturdy. The Mi Max is a solid-looking phone, but its shine fades when compared to the new Mi MIX.
Both models are huge. The Mi MIX measures 158.8 x 81.9 x 7.9 mm; great size for a 6.4-inch device but quite large dimensions nevertheless. The Mi Max measures 173.1 x 88.3 x 7.5 mm, even larger than the other model, making it one proper behemoth of a smartphone.
Hardware, Display
The Mi MIX is powered by a Snapdragon 821 (2×2.35 GHz Kryo & 2×1.6 GHz Kryo coupled by Adreno 530 GPU), the latest chipset from Qualcomm that will give the phone mountains of power under the hood. The phone is equipped with 4/6 GB of RAM and 128/256 GB of internal storage, which can’t be expanded.
The Mi Max comes in two flavors. The regular edition is equipped with a Snapdragon 650 (4×1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 & 2×1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 coupled with Adreno 510), it has 3 gigs of RAM and a choice between 32 GB or 64 GB of Internal storage. Prime edition features a Snapdragon 652 (4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 & 4×1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 along with Adreno 510) SoC, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Built-in storage is expandable on both versions.
Xiaomi Mi MIX features a huge 6.4-inch IPS LCD display. Display resolution is 1080 x 2040 pixels, basically a 1080p resolution. Sharpness is solid at 362 ppi pixel density so even though the screen is huge you won’t notice any pixelation whatsoever. The Mi Max features a 6.44-inches IPS LCD display with 1080p resolution.
Edgeless design found on the Mi MIX makes watching movies a superb experience. The huge screen is great for gaming and surfing the web as well. You can even read books without any problems since the screen is so large.
Camera
The Mi MIX is equipped with a 16 MP (f/2.0) main camera sensor supporting EIS (electronic image stabilization), phase detection autofocus, dual-LED flash, and HDR. The camera is capable of recording 2160p@30fps videos. The front-facing camera (placed on a thin ceramic strip under the screen) has 5 MP.
Xiaomi Mi Max features a 16 MP (f/2.0) main camera sensor supporting phase detection autofocus, dual-LED flash, and HDR. It can record 2160p@30fps videos. The selfie camera has 5 MP (f/2.0).
Battery, Software
Both models feature huge power banks. Battery found on the Mi Max has a capacity of 4850 mAh, enough for three days of charging independence. Battery found on the Mi MIX has 4400 mAh, and should provide at least two days of usage.
Both phones come with Android Marshmallow coated with Xiaomi’s MIUI, and they both have a fingerprint sensor.
Conclusion
If you don’t mind a massive screen, the Mi Mix is the best-looking phone out there. It should arrive during November with the price of $515 for the 128 GB model. If you look at a massive screen but don’t want to shell out lots of money, the Mi Max is still more than a solid choice. It features a metal body, and a great processor, all that for the price of Rs. 14,999 (around @225) for 3/32 GB version.
