Xiaomi has been setting down its feet firmly in the Indian smartphone market and the Chinese company has announced that its latest flagship device Xiaomi Mi 5 will be launched on Thursday this week in India.
Xiaomi had earlier this month promised at the launch event of the Redmi Note 3 in India that the Mi 5 will be ‘coming to India in a month’ and it indeed has kept its promise.
Hugo Barra, Xiaomi’s Global VP had earlier said that the Xiaomi India team had been working on bringing the device to India ‘in a month’, although no specific date was announced back then. The company had launched the Mi 5 in Beijing, China last month and India will be one of the first markets to receive the smartphone outside China.
The Xiaomi Mi 5 has received a great response back in China with an overwhelming 16 million registrations for the device for the first sale. The device was launched in three models: standard edition having 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32GB internal storage priced at CNY 1,999 (approximately Rs. 21,000), Pro version sporting 4GB of LPDD4 RAM and 128GB internal storage priced at CNY 2,699 (approximately Rs. 28,000) and a prime version with 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB storage priced at CNY 2,299 (approximately Rs. 24,000). It is still unclear whether Xiaomi will launch all these three variants in India or not. There is no word on the Indian pricing, however, one should expect the phone around similar prices mentioned above.
To recall, the Xiaomi Mi 5 sports an FHD 5.15-inch display with curved 3D Ceramic glass and a pixel density of 428ppi. The Mi 5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset along with Adreno 530 GPU. The RAM and internal storage vary according to the models.
The Mi 5 features a 16-megapixel Sony IMX298 rear sensor with PDAF (phase detection autofocus), LED flash, 4-axis OIS, and sapphire glass protection lens. It supports 4K video capturing and has a f/2.0 aperture. There is a 4-Ultrapixel secondary camera with 2-micron pixels.
The phone is quite sleek and slim measuring 144.5×69.2×7.25mm and weighing just 129 grams. The device supports dual nano-SIM and 4G LTE. It packs a battery of 3000mAh and supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 which is almost 20% faster than its predecessor, Quick Charge 2.0. There is also USB Type-C port, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/ac, VoLTE support among other connectivity options.
