WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging services across various platforms, and today the app is receiving an update with a new feature. WhatsApp Status, more or less like the Snapchat’s stories feature, has been under testing for quite some time, and finally, the official roll out has begun.
WhatsApp Status – All you need to know
Until now, the app users were only able to issue a text status message in WhatsApp, but from now on it will basically act like a clone of Snapchat Stories. One can add pictures, videos, and GIFs in his/her status now, personalize it with emojis, text, and drawings. With the new setup, every status will automatically expire after 24 hours. Classic Snapchat, isn’t it!
To add something new from its own side, WhatsApp Status will be end-to-end encrypted, just like the chat messages.
WhatsApp becomes more than just a messaging service
The new feature adds more than a functionality to the already popular service. WhatsApp Messenger is more like a social network with WhatsApp Status. Users can now express their moods, share vacation shots, and more with friends and family on a daily basis.
It will be interesting to see the adoption rate for the new feature. If it succeeds, we might see a significant drop in Snapchat usage, which is basically based on this particular feature.
In case you don’t know, Facebook once wanted to acquire Snapchat, but couldn’t. Hence, the rollout of the new feature is deemed as a retaliation to the failed effort.
The new WhatsApp update is rolling out to Android, iOS, and Windows devices in phases. Therefore, it might take some time before hitting your particular device. For those who have the update installed on their smartphone, we request you to share the experience in the comments section below.
