Samsung released the 2016 iteration of the J series and A series smartphones last December. Both mid-range smartphones come with competitive features and prices. However, since the holiday season is here, we can expect great deals on the Samsung smartphones. Let’s see, which of the two is a better alternative. The Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) sports a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a full HD resolution and a pixel density of 236ppi. While the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) features a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with full HD resolution and a pixel density of 424ppi. The A5 (2016) offers better resolution. Also, it comes with a fingerprint sensor, which is missing from the J7 (2016).

Performance

While the Galaxy J7 (2016) is powered by a Snapdragon 617 Exynos 7870 Octa-core processor and Adreno 510 GPU, the Galaxy A5 (2016) is powered by a Snapdragon 615 Exynos 7580 Octa-core processor and Mali-T760 MP2 GPU. Both processors clock maximum speed of 1.6GHz.

Also, both smartphones are supported by 2GB of RAM and 16 GB internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 256 GB via a micro SD card slot. However, in terms of an operating system, while both the devices run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the A5 (2016) has been upgraded from 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Camera

Both the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) and the Galaxy A5 (2016) sport a 13-megapixel rear camera with features like CMOS image sensor, Continuous Shot, HDR (High Dynamic Range), Interval Shot, Night, Panorama, Pro, Selfie, Beauty Face, Wide Selfie, etc. There is also a 5 5-megapixel front camera on-board.

However, while the J7 (2016) comes with LED flash on both cameras, the A5 (2016) features LED flash in rear camera only. The rear camera in A5 also comes with Optical image stabilization [OIS].

Connectivity

Both smartphones offer standard connectivity options such as 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11, b/g/n, microUSB 2.0, A-GPS and Bluetooth.

Battery

The Galaxy J7 (2016) comes with a removable 3300 mAh battery, while the Galaxy A5 (2016) is backed by a non-removable 2900 mAh battery with fast charging support.

Price

The Galaxy A5 (2016) comes with a price tag of Rs. 21,900, while the J7 (2016) costs only Rs. 15,990. That is a huge difference between two smartphones which offer similar features, more or less.

Verdict

The elegant looking Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) comes with a fingerprint sensor and Gorilla Glass 4 finish on both sides. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) also sports an excellent design and comes with a powerful configuration at a much lower price point. Overall, the Galaxy J7 (2016) looks more appealing than the former choice.
