With the arrest of the Ukranian national Artem Vaulin, the boss of world’s biggest online piracy site, Kickass Torrents (Kat.cr), was shutdown. Vaulin was arrested in Poland for copyright infringement, money laundering, and other charges. The shutdown of KickAss Torrents came as a shocker to the online community. To fill the void, several clone sites have made their appearance, including torrentz2.eu, the clone site of torrentz.eu. IBTimes has now reported that the original Kat.ph website is slowly making its way to the torrenting world.
In attempt to bring back KickAss Torrents, several KAT admins and members tried to resurrect the popular torrenting site by launching katcr.co. And now, the moderators of the KAT community have also started a fund raising campaign. The campaign aims at seeking donations to rebuild the original KAT website. With over 50 millions users, KAT had a solid user base. While alternatives like The Pirate Bay, Extra torrent continue to make their presence felt, KickAss Torrents has its own loyal following, which is now likely to be resurrected.
Just weeks after KickAss Torrents was shutdown, torrentz.eu mysteriously announced “farewell” to its users. Torrentz.eu hosted no torrents of its own but only linked to other sites hosting torrents such as The Pirate Bay. Even since it was founded in 2003, Torrentz.eu has been the most favorite search engine for the torrent community for over 13 years straight. The reason for shutting down torrentz.eu remains unknown. This recent development of KickAss Torrent resurrection may give hopes to the online torrenting community. The post reads –
“This site we now inhabit is costing money: Money that a few individuals put up to ensure the survival of this Community. This is still not the Kat we all remember but on a daily basis it is getting closer. However to get there regardless of how Magical the Pointy Hat Wizzard’s are a large portion of the coding is where the need for professional companies enter the door. These people however cost money as do the hard drives pc’s etc etc. So the fundraiser is a stop gap where basically any donation goes towards helping the site return to a state where it can once again support itself.”
KickAss Torrents forum admin had earlier promised that KAT would continue to exist in one form or another and that it would be back stronger than ever. Looks like this is now going to become a reality. It’s only a matter of time before the stronger website of KAT is up and running!
