Mukesh Ambani finally revealed the tariff plans for the much coveted Reliance Jio after keeping mum over the last few months at the Reliance AGM. The announcement was expected to set the Indian telecom market on fire and it indeed did.

For starters, Mr. Ambani announced that Reliance Jio won’t be charging a single penny for the voice calls on any networks. This comes as a pleasant surprise, although this isn’t something new as it has been practised by the big telcos in the western countries for some time now.

Mr Ambani said, “Pay for only one service – either voice or data, not both. World over, operators charge only for data, voice and messaging are essentially free. All voice calls for Jio customers will be absolutely free.”

So you’ll be paying only for the data and even the data plans are very attractive. Reliance Jio data plans are far more effective and almost one-tenth the cost of the current 4G service providers. Reliance Jio is offering 4G data for as low as Rs. 23 per GB. Here’s a full list of the various tariff plans:

The lowest pack costing Rs. 149 and offering just 300MB 4G data might not be attractive, but even this is good for the users who mostly call or text and don’t use the internet that frequently. But the rest of the packs are indeed very attractive. The Rs.499 pack offers 4GB of normal 4G internet plus unlimited 4G internet at night hours for a period of 28 days. On top of it, Reliance Jio is offering 8GB of data over Reliance Jio’s upcoming network of Wi-Fi hotspots. So you’re getting around 12GB of 4G data excluding the night data for just Rs. 499 which translates to about Rs. 41 per GB. The cost per GB keeps on decreasing gradually, once you opt for the higher plans and the top most packs costing Rs. 4999 offers 75GB normal 4G data plus 150 GB WiFi usage which converts to around Rs. 23 per GB. These are all prepaid plans and there are no postpaid plans as of yet.

Mr Ambani said, “Current market practice is to charge for data a base rate between Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 10,000 – Jio will have a base rate which is 1/10th of this. Our data plans go even further with an effective rate of 5p/MB or Rs. 50/ GB.”

If you think this is all, you’re wrong. Reliance Jio still had many surprises under its sleeve. The biggest one being the removal of any roaming charges on voice calls to any network. Roaming charges have been completely abolished by Reliance. Mr Ambani said, “Put an end to all voice call charges for all voice calls that are domestic.”

Reliance is also offering 25 percent extra data to the students who just need to bring a valid student ID proof while signing up. Reliance is offering the Jio offer for absolutely free starting September 5 till December 2016 for everyone who wish to try out under the ‘Jio welcome offer’. This offer would include unlimited 4G data, Voice calls, SMSes and free access to all the Jio Premium apps.
