So what does the Overwatch patch for PS4 Pro actually do? It’s not so easy to see what the enhancements actually are. Developers are not obliged to make PS4 Pro patches. So, thank them for the 4K HUD and minor improvements. It’s better than nothing.
Overwatch PS4 Pro improvements
It’s a competitive game. They made the right choice. A resolution boost is not worth the performance hit seen on other titles. Locked 60fps is more important. Previously, it was a dynamic resolution and did drop below 1080p. It now does not. If you look at other games, they are performing worse on the PS4 Pro after increasing the resolution. We think they made the right choice sticking to 1080p locked resolution and frame rate with slightly better effects.
On the other hand, Call of duty is running better on the PS4 PRO at higher resolution. Some developers just pushed the resolution too high, TLOU should be 2880*1620 not 3200*1800. Then it could have the better shadow maps and not have any drops below 60 fps. But 2K to 4K upscaled with HDR would make overwatch look really nice. Ratchet and Clank look stunning on the Pro. We think it might have to do with balance reasons. HDR makes it counter intuitive in multiplayer due to adding more visual clutter and at times can get in the way of seeing the guy hiding behind the obstacle.
It is not absolutely perfect but any improvements towards a perfect 1080p60fps are valid to us. So, we are praising Blizzard because of its priorities, even if the improvements themselves are not big. Anyways, let us know your thoughts in the comments.
