The Oppo R9 is the new talk of the town, and the smartphone is making people go gaga over it. Launched yesterday, the R9 packs great specs and looks breathtakingly beautiful. However, it has got some tough contenders in the market, including the Xiaomi Mi5 and the Galaxy S7. How does the Oppo R9 fare against these phones? Let’s do a quick comparison.
Oppo R9 vs. Galaxy S7 vs. Xiaomi Mi5
First things first, you should note that the prices of these phones differ by a large margin. So we are going to be weighing the specs first and then we’ll decide which phone gives you the most value for money.
Outer Appearance
The Galaxy S7 is one of the best-looking phones in the market currently, with its all-metal construction and perfectly refined design. It has got all the curves in the right place and the shine looks ultra-premium. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Mi5 is one rectangular block that is curved from all the sides, and yes, it looks premium and good. But the Oppo R9 is what premium smartphones should look like. Even though the rear of the phone gives us an iPhone-ish feeling, it looks great and the front looks even and fluid. Overall, you’ll not be able to stop admiring the beauty of the R9.
Display, Processor, Memory
The Galaxy S7 gets a 5.1-inch QHD display, which is one of the brightest in the market, while the Xiaomi Mi5 sports a slightly larger 5.15-inch FullHD screen. The Oppo R9 sports the largest FullHD screen here at 5.5-inch. The S7 has got the best screen, no doubts there.
The R9 is powered by a 2GHz octa-core Helio P10 processor, while the Mi5 gets a 1.8GHz quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor. The S7 on the other hand comes with a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 820/Exynos 8890 processor. The Snapdragon 820-powered phones are the best performing ones.
The Galaxy S7 and the Oppo R9 get 4GB of RAM, and the Xiaomi Mi5 gets 3GB RAM. Talking of storage, the Galaxy S7 and the Xiaomi Mi5 come with 32GB onboard storage, while the Oppo R9 gets 64GB of internal storage. And the Mi5 does not get a microSD slot while the other two do.
Camera, Battery, and Other Features
The 12MP rear camera of the Galaxy S7 with PDAF, dual-tone dual LED flash, and OIS has got a large sensor and thus gives one of the best camera performances in the smartphone market. The phone gets a 5MP front camera. The Xiaomi Mi5 gets a 16MP rear camera and a 4MP UltraPixel front camera, and we expect great picture quality from the setup. The Oppo R9 flaunts a 13MP camera at the rear and a whopping 16MP snapper at the front, so you are bound to get ultra-wide and detailed selfies.
The Mi5 and S7 get 3000mAh batteries and run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, while the R9 makes do with a 2850mAh juicer and gets Android 5.1 Lollipop. All these smartphones are 4G LTE enabled and get fingerprint sensors on the front home key. However, the Mi5 and S7 get NFC to support Android Pay and Samsung Pay, but the R9 does not offer NFC. And for the record, the S7 is waterproof and dust-proof, IP68 certified.
Price and Verdict
The Xiaomi Mi5 starts at around $305 and is the cheapest among the three smartphones. The Oppo R9 starts at around $432, while the S7 starts at $699. Of course, if you have the money, you should go for the Galaxy S7 as it offers better camera, better processor, great looks, and Samsung Pay, and more. But if you are on a budget but can spare around $400, then the Oppo R9 is your best bet. Consider the Xiaomi Mi5 if your budget is around $300 and want a Snapdragon 820 phone for that money.
