The much awaited Oppo R9 and Oppo R9 Plus were officially announced in China today. Both these phones share almost the same specs but still have a lot of differences.

The R9 is slightly small but still it will be counted as a phablet phone. It sports a 5.5-inch FHD AMOLED display with a very thin 1.6mm bezel size. The dimensions of R9 is 151.8 x 74.3 x 6.6mm. It is powered by a Mediatek Helio P10 chipset with a quad-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz. R9 boasts of a massive 4GB of RAM and it packs 64GB of internal storage which can be expanded to 128GB with an external memory card in the second SIM slot. Yeah, that’s right both Oppo R9 and Oppo R9 Plus have hybrid microSD/second-SIM slots.

The most important thing and which is said to be the cashing chip is the camera of these two beasts. The front camera lens of R9 claims to snap even more high-res and brighter photographs than the rear shooter. So, that’s one for selfie addicts. Selfie shooter is a 16MP lens with a f/2.0 aperture that can cover a 78.1-degree view. At the back, R9 sports a 13-megapixel behind a 5-element lens with an aperture of f/2.2 and FoV of 80.6-degree.

Moving on to R9 Plus, this smartphone is really something. It is like a more equipped sibling of R9. It sports an even larger 6-inch FHD display, built with same AMOLED stuff. However, because of large display size the side bezels are wider at 1.76mm but still it has managed to yield 79.3% of the screen-to-body ratio as against R9.

R9 Plus is powered by Snapdragon 652 chipset with quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A72’s and another quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A53’s. We again have the same storage story, 64GB internal expandable to 128GB with another 128GB internal storage version.

On the camera front, it has the same 16-MP front shooter, but on the back, it offers another 16-MP camera lens. Oppo has used Sony’s IMX298 sensor with a 6-element f/2.0 aperture lens. R9 Plus can capture videos in 4K Ultra-HD resolution because of its all-powerful processors which R9 can’t do.

Both R9 and R9 plus feature a fingerprint scanner on the front right below the display and boast a fast VOOC Flash Charge. R9 is fueled by a 2,850 mAh battery while, on the other hand, R9 plus is powered by a massive 4,120 mAh battery. On the connectivity front, the R9 and R9 Plus support 4G LTE, with Wi-FI 802.11 ac available only in R9 Plus while, R9 has to satisfy with a slower one. There is Bluetooth v4.1 on R9 Plus while R9 is equipped with the older v4.0.

Oppo R9 is priced at CNY 2,799 and can be purchased online with pre-orders already started, and is expected to be delivered on March 24. The R9 Plus is costlier because of its specs and is priced at CNY 3,299 for 64GB and will go on sale on April 12. One thing worth noting is that both Oppo R9 and Oppo R9 Plus run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which will soon become old with Android N already out (previews only), so we may expect that Oppo might roll out Android M soon to these high-powered devices.
