There are many companies who charge double of the actual price of their product, such as Apple. Just like them, there is another company which goes by the name Oculus VR, who are charging a lot more than the actual price of their product. And that product is the critically acclaimed virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift.
Recently, a teardown and piece by piece analysis of the Oculus Rift shows that the product is not worth $600 (the launch price of the headset). In fact, the analysis showcases that it costs less than $200, which is $400 less than the actual price. Here’s the teardown of Oculus Rift.
- AMOLED display: $69
- Plastics, metal, hardware, other miscellaneous parts: $24.09
- Hardware makeup: $22.50
All these three things make up a total of $115.59. Now, one thing to keep in mind is that this doesn’t include the cost of marketing and advertisement of the product. Oculus Rift is a new product, so the cost of marketing and advertisement would be without any doubt, high. But still, a $600 price tag isn’t what this product should have. It should fairly cost around $300-400, which is acceptable.
Oculus Rift’s teardown will surely make a lot of people furious, especially those who own the device. We currently don’t know how Oculus VR will react to this, but they surely won’t be happy.
