The Hololens is perhaps one of the most exciting, albeit expensive, gadget to ever come out of Microsoft. The augmented reality headset was designed so that users can interact with their environment in a digital way. The Hololens headset is still in its trial mode. Nevertheless, it has seen a number of applications that are worth anybody’s attention. A new one, in particular, is the HoloLems game developed by Globacore for the Hololens.
To the wise and old, Lemmings is a fun 2D-scroller game with the main aim of saving all the tiny green-haired creatures called lemmings. The game is played by supervising the lemmings and leading them to the exit while making sure they do not fall to their deaths. The Hololens version of the game is very much like the original, only this time, your environment plays a big role on how you play the game.
HoloLems use the same game mechanics as the original. Players will need to guide the lemmings from the starting line to the exit while trying to keep them alive. The actual environment of the player, for instance the living room, will be the actual arena where the game is played. A sofa or any other flat surface can be where the lemmings walk on. Meanwhile, the gaps between furnitures can act as obstacles like an abyss reminiscent of the original game. Players will have to tell the lemmings what to do, like build a bridge, change direction, or stop moving.
The game is just one of the many possibilities of the Hololens. In fact, when it was first introduced, Microsoft developed a Hololens version of the Minecraft game. Other applications for the AR headset are also available online. Unfortunately, not anyone can buy the Hololens. With a price tag of $1,500, it is only for those who are serious in developing applications for the platform. Nevertheless, for those who are lucky enough to have the headset, you can download the app for free from this link.
