Microsoft may not have been very successful with the Lumia lineup, but the products in its Surface series have surely got a huge fan following. The Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book got loads of appreciation and returned good sales figures, and the same thing is expected from the upcoming Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 2. While Microsoft is working on those devices, the company is also getting ready to add a new member to the Surface family. But this time it’s not a hybrid tablet-laptop. It’s the Microsoft Surface Phone.
As you would have noticed, the Surface products boast of beastly specs and give out ground-breaking performance. The same is expected from the Surface Phone, which is expected to be the most powerful smartphone when it launches. So keeping that in mind, here are five things to know about the release date, specs, price, etc. of the device.
1. Codename is Juggernaut Alpha
Even though it may sound odd, the Surface Phone has reportedly been codenamed as Juggernaut Alpha. While Juggernaut is still not close enough to the codename we would expect for the smartphone, the codenaming at least suggests that the project is ongoing and is being worked upon.
2. Up to 8GB RAM and 512GB Storage!
A recent leak suggests that there will be several variants of the Surface Phone for different segments. The first variant will get 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, which is ideally meant for the regular users who want a Windows smartphone. The next variant will be getting 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, which is targeted towards enthusiasts who want more powerful performance. And the top variant with 8GB RAM and 500GB storage will be pitched to the enterprise users who want to perform all their business on their phone.
3. Surface Phone Will Support Continuum
Just like we said, powerful specs will allow the users to replace their laptops with the Surface Phone. And if 8GB RAM and 500GB internal storage is being offered, then Microsoft will also include Continuum in the phone. This feature will allow the device to be connected to a display and keyboard/mouse so that it can be used as a desktop PC on the go.
4. Kaby Lake Processors Inside With 21MP Camera
A new report says that the Surface Phone will be powered by Intel’s next-gen Kaby Lake processors that will also be seen on the Surface Book 2 and Surface Pro 5. The new CPU will provide beastly performance and battery efficiency to the smartphone. Also, 21MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss lens and 10MP front camera is expected.
5. Surface Phone Release Date is 2017
As Kaby Lake processors won’t arrive before the end of 2016 or early next year, the Surface Phone will be launched only in or around the spring of 2017. This is unconfirmed, but it is surely a big possibility. As for the Surface Phone price, the device might cost around $900-$1000. Other rumors suggest a physical QWERTY keyboard (either inbuilt or attached) in the device.
So that’s all we know right now about the Surface Phone. We’ll keep updating the information when new details arrive. Till then, keep checking back.
