With Unicode 9 is up and running, Google has vowed to take full advantage of it and ensure a better representation of people across countries and cultures via a slew of new emojis in Android 7.1 Nougat, the latest version of its Android operating system.
The update brings along a good number of professions in both male and female emoji forms, making the description of your occupation even more nuanced. E.g., there will be no dearth of emojis if you were ever to use emojis to underline the fact that you are a lady techie, firefighter, astronaut, student, judge, or artist.
Adding more to that, Google will also enable users to customize the skin tone of emojis, meaning there will be more ethnic diversities to choose from. Much akin to how Whatsapp allows users to choose different skin tones of its emojis, Android 7.1 users can do the same by touching and pressing the emoji to open the palette of choices.
Worth noting, the majority of the newly introduced emojis support “fallback” displays. Meaning if a new emoji is not supported by a device running an older version of Android, they will get to see its equivalent. For example, if you send a “female astronaut” emoji to your friend who still uses Android 6.0 Marshmallow, she will receive two emojis such as a female and a rocket.
