It was a big day for Microsoft yesterday. The company has just kick-started its efforts to infiltrate the education industry once more. While this may seem similar to anything that Microsoft has done in the past, this time around it has a new operating system and the new Surface Laptop to boot.
At the #MicrosoftEDU event in New York yesterday, the company unveiled its latest Windows operating system, the Windows 10 S. And after some lengthy introductions of what the new OS can do, Microsoft then whipped out a Surface device that runs on the said OS. The new laptop, while still belonging to the current Surface line, is a breath of fresh air especially to those familiar with the Google Chromebook.
Essentially, the Surface Laptop is a Microsoft version of a Chromebook. However, instead of running Chrome OS, it runs on a slimmed down version of Windows 10. The main difference it has on Windows 10 is that it can only run applications that are available on the Windows Store.
In terms of specs, the $999 machine is quite impressive. For the price, users will get an Intel i5 processor with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB flash storage. The display is a 13.5-inch PixelSense panel with resolutions of 2256×1504 pixels. Apart from the display’s impressive specs, it also features touch and Surface Pen enabled.
Microsoft claims that the Surface Laptop is capable of 14.5 hours of continuous use on a single charge. And with a weight of just 1.25 kilos, this is pretty impressive indeed. However, for those who still feel that the base configuration is a bit underpowered, the Surface Laptop can be bumped up to an Intel i7 processor with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of flash storage.
The Surface Laptop will become available in the market starting June 15. Nevertheless, the device is already on pre-order from the Microsoft Store.
