Microsoft isn’t out of the phone business. Not yet. There are reports about Microsoft testing several prototypes of the Surface Phone. Rumors hint at the Surface phone sporting the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 running at 2.4GHz. With 6GB RAM and other high-end specs, including the mobile version of Windows 10, Microsoft fans are eagerly waiting for the upcoming Surface Phone. However, it looks like the Spring launch of Surface Phone is highly unlikely.
Microsoft Surface Phone may not launch this Spring
Microsoft has confirmed that it will be holding an event in New York on May 2. The event is being publicized with the hashtag #MicrosoftEDU. The live stream starts on May 2, 2017, at 9.30 am Eastern Time (6.30 am Pacific). While many fans were expecting the Windows giant to unveil the Surface Phone, given recent reports, it looks highly unlikely.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Surface Phone is not going to be launched at the upcoming New York event. And to those who are expecting Surface Pro 5 news during the event, be ready to be disappointed. Because we may not get to hear anything about Surface Pro 5 either.
Instead, what we will get to see during the May 2nd Microsoft event will be the launch of Windows 10 Cloud. Microsoft has been working on Windows 10 Cloud for quite some time now. Windows 10 Cloud is basically a new Windows 10 SKU that’s locked down and restricted to only running apps from the Windows Store. We may also get to see a system to run the Windows 10 SKU – probably an iteration of Surface Book or a device on the lines of Surface 4?
The Windows 10 Cloud and the system accompanying it – Windows 10 CloudBook is likely to be targeted towards mid-end segment and is expected to run Microsoft’s exclusive Windows 10 Cloud OS. Windows 10 CloudBook is being touted as Microsoft’s answer to the popular Google Chromebooks.
