What chips will be part of the next iMac will depend on the launch date. Intel’s Kaby Lake went into mass production late 2016 while Cannonlake is not likely to be out until second half of 2017. Ice Lake is scheduled for 2018 and Tiger Lake for 2019. Considering Intel’s Kaby Lake started shipping last year, it could be possible that Apple has considered the Kaby Lake as the choice for the next set of iMacs. It’s worth noting that Kaby Lake supports Thuderbolt 3, USB 3.1 and DisplayPort 1.2. If rumors are to be believed, the next of iMacs will come with Kaby Lake i7-7700.

Well, how about AMD processors? Is Apple seriously considering AMD processors for iMac? With reports talking about the all new AMD Ryzen breaking benchmarking records, there’s a high possibility that Apple is considering switching from Intel to AMD. If the iMac release is sometime in late 2017, Apple still has sufficient time to make the switch from Intel to AMD. AMD Ryzen’s astonishingly efficient 65W TDP fits right into Apple’s philosophy.

Other expectations surrounding the new iMac 2017 include a 5K Retina display for 27-inch iMac model, an OLED touch bar, a powerful GPU – mostly AMD Polaris 11 and VR support.

New iMac 2017: Release Date

Going by Apple’s history, it prominently launches products during three major press events – September, March, and June. Mac updates are usually announced in smaller launch events, dedicated exclusively for the Macs, just like the iMac update we saw in 2015. It’s highly likely that WWDC 2017 – that’ll take place from 5-9 June this year – will be the right forum for another iMac update. Or will Apple keep us waiting longer?
