Christmas is coming and with the holiday season atmosphere in the air, this is the time when we should try helping others. A few Best Buy employees decided to bring joy to one of the customers, a teen who would come to the Best Buy store almost every day to play Super Smash Bros on the Wii U.
Employees noticed one teenager who visited the Valley Stream, New York Best Buy store nearly every day to play Super Smash Bros on the Wii U display console. They decided to prepare him a nice surprise. A couple of employees chipped in managed to gather enough money and bought a Wii U console bundle (along with Super Smash Bros game) for the said teenager.
The kid was so surprised that the employees had to convince him the console was his, after gifting the console to him. One employee, Rahiem Storr, a long-time worker at Best Buy recorded the occasion and uploaded on YouTube along with a brief explanation. He wrote in the video description that “This kid came in every single day to play the display Wii U, the employees in this store saw an opportunity to make a child smile and did just that. They chipped in and purchased a Wii U for him with their own money.”

Kotaku decided to investigate the case a bit and to contact the general Manager of the store to check out if the video was real. The General Manager confirmed the kid came in every day to play a display Wii U console. Best Buy employees from the Appliances Department noticed this and decided to bring some joy to the kid. The General Manager didn’t know what they did until the video went viral.
The video eventually went viral on YouTube, generating a ton of reactions. Many of the reactions were negative, which made Rahiem, the guy who uploaded the video, quite disappointed. He was so much disappointed by the negative reactions that he recorded and uploaded another video, talking about how a bunch of negative reactions is “exactly what’s wrong with the world.”
In the comments section of the first video Rahiem wrote that “Whilst people have some horrible opinions about Best Buy associates I can not begin to express how wrong they actually are. I posted this to show otherwise, can’t tell you how often I give people discounts or children that save money to buy items and come up a few dollars short. We are here to complete people’s lives not take away from it.”
And the guy is right. It doesn’t matter the employees work at Best Buy, one of the largest retail chains in the world, a perfect example of modern liberal capitalism corporate entity. The guys just wanted to bring joy to a random stranger and they did just that. There’s nothing wrong with helping others, and the negative reactions just show how much apathetic our society has become.
