Google has launched a new app, PhotoScan, that aims to digitize old photos in a breeze. It has been developed by the same team behind Google Photos. The app is quite a handful in maintaining a digital copy of old photo prints, which are quite prone to wear and tear. You might lose them or their colors may fade with time, so backing up in the cloud is a must.
Scanning photo for a digital copy is in tradition for quite some time now which isn’t the easiest and cheapest solution. You need to have a scanner or visit a xerox shop for the same. But, with the new PhotoScan app by Google, all you need is a smartphone. Just click it and save it.
Google said, “We don’t want to mail away our original copy, buying a scanner is costly and time consuming, and if you try to take a photo of a photo, you end up with crooked edges and glare,”
How to make use of Google PhotoScan
PhotoScan has the easiest of interface allowing you to quickly scan a vast amount of photos without much hassle. The only tradeoff, however, is the quality, which isn’t as high as a full flatbed scanner.
Even with this tradeoff, the app is more than useful. Once you open the app, it will automatically turn on the camera and instruct users to place a photo within the frame to start scanning. Fours dots will appear on the photo for marking the ends. To scan the photograph, you simply need to move the phone over each dot and hold it under the circle fills in. Once all four dots are covered, PhotoScan scans the photo and you can move on to the next one.
Thereafter, PhotoScan takes the matter into its own hands and does the required cropping, color correction and all.
Google added, “PhotoScan gets you great looking digital copies in seconds — it detects edges, straightens the image, rotates it to the correct orientation, and removes glare,”.
PhotoScan is available for both iOS and android platform, and believe you should definitely give it a shot. Do let us know your experience in the comments section below.
