Radeon RX 470 Features GCN 4.0 and Priced at just $179, Reviews Already Available

In our post about Radeon RX 470 and RX 460, we discussed specifications of both RX 470 and RX 460, while presenting a comparison of their specs. The Radeon RX 470 is based on a salvaged version of Polaris 10 GPU. It clocks lower compared to other cards to provide lower power consumption. The GPU configuration ships with 32 CUs enabled (2048 SPs), which is 4 fewer than RX 480. The RX 470 will clock at 926MHz for the core clock. The boost clock will run faster, at 1206MHz. The lower than RX 480 clocking speed makes sense because RX 470 stands at 120W TBP. This is 30W lower than RX 480.

The Radeon RX 470 is based on Polaris 10 and delivers stunning HD gaming performance, all at a competitive price of just US $179. The GCN 4.0 architecture is codenamed Polaris. The RX 470 features a salvaged version of Polaris 10, with four compute units disabled. Of course, this directly translates to cost benefits – and the reason why the RX 470 is available under US $200.

The Radeon RX 480 is slightly advanced in comparison with RX 470. The RX 470’s shader/texture/compute performance is at about 85% of RX 480 and geometry/ROP throughput at 95% of RX 480. RX 470 comes with added benefit of higher clock speeds, twice the number of stream processors, and architectural enhancements and new features that went into Polaris, relative to R7 270/230. But it’s worth noting that RX 470 offers somewhat lower performance in exchange for a lower price and lower power consumption.

The RX 470 is strategically priced at US $179 and aims to capture the sub-$200 graphic card market. With a TDP of 120W and 6-pin connector to power up, the RX 470 lives up to its performance specs but does not fare better than the RX 480, which is priced more than $200.
