Xiaomi has been ruling the budget segment in the smartphone market ever since it went global with its products. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 was launched last year in China and recently in India, and the phone has been touted as one of the top smartphones you can buy under $200.
However, Samsung has recently revised its Galaxy J-series and the new Galaxy J3 (2016) comes with some good improvements. So can Samsung’s brand power beat Xiaomi’s value for money quotient? Let’s compare the specs!

Display and Battery
The Galaxy J3 2016 comes with a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED screen and a decent 2600mAh removable battery. While that’s a good enough configuration, but it surely cannot beat the Redmi Note 3 that gets a 5.5-inch FullHD screen. Also, the Xiaomi phone gets a 4000mAh non-removable battery that will last you much more than the J3.
Processor and Memory
The Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) is powered by a low-end 1.2GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC8830 processor that is a decent performer. But the Redmi Note 3 flaunts a six-core Snapdragon 650 that is faster and snappier and will easily beat the J3 by a large margin.
As for the memory, the 2016 Galaxy J3 comes with 1.5 GB of RAM and 8GB/16GB internal storage. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 takes the lead again with two options- 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage or 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage.
Camera Specs
The Galaxy J3 (2016) comes with an 8MP rear camera with AF and LED flash. It gets a 5MP front camera. Even the Redmi Note 3 gets a 5MP front camera, but at the back, the megapixels just double up, as the Xiaomi phone gets a 16MP rear camera with PDAF and dual-tone, dual LED flash.

The Redmi Note 3 comes with a fingerprint sensor at the back which the J3 does not get.
Price and Availability
The Samsung Galaxy J3 2016 has been launched in a few countries including India, where it is available for INR 9,000 ($135 approx.). The Redmi Note 3 in India (Snapdragon variant) costs INR 9,999 ($150 approx.) for the 2GB/16GB version, while the 3GB/32GB version costs INR 11,999 ($180 approx.)
Conclusion
Sadly enough, Samsung still thinks that it’s brand power is enough to sell off a low-end phone at a comparatively higher price. But in any way, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is a much better phone with a full-metal body, great internals, and a lucrative price tag.
