News has been filling up the Internets that Pokémon might be getting a live-action adaptation at long last and a top-secret auction for the film rights is currently underway and “nearing completion”. According to The Hollywood Reporter, companies interested in the property include Legendary Entertainment, Sony and Warner Bros. Sony making a live-action movie for a Nintendo property? Strange times we live in.
According to the site’s sources, Legendary is edging out its competitors to win the auction. Of course, neither Legendary, Sony, nor Warner Bros. have offered any comments on the issue as yet, and it is unlikely they will. Assuming the rights are given away before the end of this year, we’ll likely not hear of a live-action movie project for a few more years at the very least.
Potential for a Pokémon live-action movie would be, needless to say, tremendous. The franchise has hit its 20th year anniversary this year, and continues to march forward with a number of new projects, from mobile ventures like Pokémon GO and Pokémon Comaster to new anime films, continuation of the anime series and of course, a new pair of Pokémon handheld games: Pokémon Sun and Moon.
