Attack on Titan came out in Japan last month, and Japanese players have already been slaying Titans left and right since then. Richard Eisenbeis of Kotaku got his hands on the game and thinks that the best part of it lies in its multiplayer, while he describes its side-missions as “a boring slog”.

According to Eisenbeis, in the singleplayer mode, you are forced to kill each titan yourself because the NPCs aren’t much help. And to do that, you have to go out slicing limb after limb gathering materials as you go. This changes completely with the multiplayer patch, where you need only the killing blow on 4-5 titans to get an S-rank.

Teamwork becomes absolutely crucial, and you find your teammates splitting up to deal with the grunt enemies before converging again to deal with the bosses. The good old distract-and-sneak-up strategy works well with teammates as well. The 30-minute playtime for levels is cut down to 10-minutes when you play with others.

Death also becomes more lenient. Rather than giving you a straight-up game over screen, you get to sit in a penalty box for 90 seconds, or until another player revives you. Another intelligent move is the lack of a shared resource pool, so you don’t have to worry about other team members stealing your valuable resources.
