Stronghold Kingdoms is a free-to-play MMO strategy game that sure looks a lot like Clash of Clans, but comes from veteran English developers Firefly Studios, renowned for other games in the Stronghold franchise stretching as far back as 2001. Now, Stronghold Kingdoms is making its way to mobile devices – will it be able to take on the existing king of mobile free-to-play strategy, Clash of Clans?

Stronghold Kingdoms converts classic Stronghold gameplay into a free-to-play, MMO mould where you can fight to take over the world. It particularly looks suited to hardcore strategy fans, the sorts who’d find present mobile strategy titles to be a bit too weak.

An element of global strategy is at play here, with a massive world that shifts allegiance according to battlefield victories and defeats. The free-to-play system is different too, allowing players to get temporary bonuses based on cards and items. The game features leaderboards for every single game world as well. Another element you won’t find in a lot of mobile strategy games is espionage, politics and backstabbing that will be necessary for the overworld.

Stronghold Kingdoms is already out on Steam for Windows, Mac and Linux and will soon be releasing on Android and iOS.
