WhatsApp is the best messaging app we have had since years, and one of its greatest qualities is that it is still available for older platforms like Symbian S60 or Android 2.1. However, the developers of the app are now considering to stop providing support for the older mobile platforms that are almost non-existent now.
WhatsApp has made an announcement that by the end of this year, the following platforms will no longer be supported officially: Windows Phone 7.1, Android 2.2, Android 2.1, Symbian S60, Nokia S40, and BlackBerry (with BlackBerry 10). It of course makes sense to stop supporting all the old OSs, but what’s surprising is that BlackBerry is on the list too. Perhaps because BlackBerry is concentrating on Android right now and might not launch any more BlackBerry 10 phones.
In a blog post by WhatsApp, the developers said:
While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app’s features in the future.
This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp.
Developers say that those who are still using phones running on the platforms mentioned above and want to keep using WhatsApp, they should be upgrading to a new Windows Phone, iOS, or Android device by the end of 2016.
Are you also a sufferer using one of such mobiles running the old operating systems? Let us know in the comments below.
